On the afternoon of March 24, President of the Parliament of the Republic of Finland Jussi Halla-aho and a high-ranking delegation of the Finnish Parliament arrived in Hanoi, beginning an official visit to Vietnam from March 24 to 26, 2024.
Welcoming the delegation at the airport were: Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee Le Anh Tuan, Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam Keijo Norvanto.
The delegation included: Mr. Sakari Puisto, Member of Parliament, Finnish Party Parliamentary Group, Chairman of the Trade Committee; Mr. Atte Kaleva, Member of Parliament, National Coalition Party Parliamentary Group, Chairman of the Finnish Delegation to the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Assembly (ASEP); Ms. Inka Hopsu, Member of Parliament, Second Vice President of the Green Party Parliamentary Group, Member of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with ASEAN; Ms. Laura Kamras, Director General of International Cooperation; Mr. Sampo Saarinen, Advisor (International Affairs) to the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament.
After arriving in Hanoi, the delegation visited the Old Quarter - Hoan Kiem Lake area.
Speaker of the Parliament Jussi Halla-aho was born in 1971 in Tampere, Finland. He holds a PhD in Slavic Languages and Cultures from the University of Helsinki and a Master's degree in Russian Language and Literature from the University of Helsinki.
He is the Chairman of the Finns Party (2017-2021); Chairman of the Administrative Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Finnish Parliament. From 21 June 2023 to present, he is the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Finland.
In international organizations, he was Deputy Head of the Finnish Delegation to the Nordic Council (February 9, 2022 - April 4, 2023); Deputy Head of the Finnish Delegation to the Council of Europe (October 10, 2013 - June 30, 2014); member of the International Affairs Forum (May 3, 2011 - June 20, 2012 and February 16, 2022 - April 4, 2023); Chairman of the International Affairs Forum (from June 21, 2023 to present)...
This is the first visit of Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Jussi Halla-aho outside the European region since he took office and he only visited Vietnam, not combined with a visit to another country. This shows the special position of Vietnam in Finland's foreign policy as well as the good friendship between the two countries' legislatures.
The visit is also a high-level delegation exchange activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Finland and Vietnam (1973-2023).
