The US government will face the risk of shutdown and default if Democrats and Republicans do not reach a budget agreement before tomorrow (October 1), in the context that Congress has to deal with many topics in parallel.
The responsibility on the shoulders of congressmen is enormous when it comes to approving the budget for the US government and raising the debt ceiling. The US government's fiscal year ends at midnight on September 30 (US time) and Congress must pass the budget for the following year before this deadline to avoid a government shutdown.

The US government has shut down many times. However, if Congress fails to pass a new budget by the deadline, this will be the first time the government has shut down during a pandemic emergency. This will leave many federal agencies without funds to continue operating, forcing some federal employees to take unpaid leave. However, on September 28, the US Senate blocked an emergency spending bill proposed by House Democrats that would have allowed US federal agencies to remain open until December 3. So far, no date has been set for a new vote.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that the government will run out of money in October and has asked Congress to raise the debt ceiling to borrow more money. In a sign of the magnitude of the challenge, Democratic President Joe Biden has canceled a planned trip to Chicago for talks with key lawmakers. Biden, seen as a conciliator, hopes to break the impasse in budget talks.
