The funding is part of Project NextGen, a $5 billion initiative led by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) within HHS, aimed at developing advanced vaccines and therapeutics that could make vaccines more widely available and provide longer-lasting protection against COVID-19.

NextGen is giving $453 million to biotech company Vaxart to conduct a study evaluating the effectiveness of its oral COVID-19 vaccine. The initiative is also giving private companies Castlevax and Cyanvac about $34 million and $40 million, respectively, to develop their spray-on vaccine candidates.

Each trial will involve about 10,000 volunteers. The results will be compared with those of vaccines already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), based on safety and effectiveness criteria.

HHS said that the COVID-19 vaccines that have been approved so far are all intramuscular vaccines. Although these biological products have shown relatively positive disease prevention effects, they are limited in their ability to create a strong immune response in mucosal areas such as the mouth, nose, and intestines, which are considered the "gateway" for the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the body.
