One of Claude Monet's famous water lily paintings, "Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas" will be auctioned with a starting price of $40 million.
Claude Monet is one of the world's most famous impressionist painters. Despite his many works, due to his fame, very few of his paintings actually make it to the market for fans and collectors. However, after a 24-year hiatus, "Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas" - one of the artist's last works - is going up for auction.
Claude Monet's painting "Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas" will sell for $40 million
"Coin du Bassin aux Nymphéas" is one of Claude Monet's famous water lily paintings. The work is being offered from an unnamed private American collection. The painting has not been on the market for nearly 25 years, Sotheby's said. It was last sold at auction in May 1997 at Christie's in New York for $6.71 million.
Painted in 1918 in Monet's garden at Giverny in northern France, "Coin du bassin aux nymphéas" features an iconic Impressionist image. “A remarkable example of Monet's late period, "Coin du bassin aux nymphéas" is a work of impressive scale and presence that transports the viewer to the otherworldly magic of Monet's garden,” said Julian Dawes, head of modern art at Sotheby's in the US.
The market for Monet's work has been on the rise in recent years. In May 2019, his 1890 painting Meules sold for a record $110.7 million, the highest price ever paid for any Impressionist work at auction.
In May this year, his "Bassin aux nymphéas" - another painting of daffodils painted by him between 1917 and 1919 - reached the auction mark of 70.4 million USD at Sotheby's in New York.
"Coin du bassin aux nymphéas" will be the highlight of Sotheby's auction on the evening of November 16. The painting is expected to sell for a starting price of $40 million.
