On February 8, Hanoi City Police announced that Dong Da District Police had issued a decision to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused and temporarily detain Tran Nhat Bao (born in 1991, residing in Phuong Lien Ward, Dong Da) for the crime of extortion.

According to the investigation results, in 2019, Bao separated from his wife and returned to live with his mother, Ms. M. (born in1966, residing in Dong Da district) and two sons. At the end of 2021, Bao left home to work outside, leaving Mrs. M. alone to raise two grandchildren (Bao's children).

At the end of 2022, Bao got acquainted and moved in with his girlfriend in Truong Dinh, Hoang Mai. At that time, Bao had a debt of about 60 million VND. Bao asked his mother to pay the debt for him, but Ms. M. did not agree, so he had the idea of threatening his mother to get the money.

At around 5:00 p.m. on January 16, Bao went to school to pick up his second son and then contacted Mrs. M. to threaten her into giving him money. Initially, Bao asked Mrs. M. to transfer 200,000 VND for dinner, but Mrs. M. refused. Seeing this, Bao threatened to starve his son and not let Mrs. M. see her grandson anymore.

That same evening, Bao took his child back to his rented room, lying to his girlfriend that no one would pick him up today so he brought him here to play for a few days. The next morning, Bao stayed home to look after his child, and in the afternoon of the same day, Bao tried to contact Mrs. M. but was unsuccessful.

After that, Bao asked his girlfriend to help him look after the child and then went home to find his mother to ask for money. Not seeing Mrs. M, the subject continuously texted her cursing and threatening her.

At around 10 p.m. the same day, Bao went to his grandfather's house on Tho Nhuom Street (Cua Nam Ward, Hoan Kiem District) because he thought Mrs. M. would be there. But when he arrived, no one opened the door for him. He went to buy a bottle of alcohol to burn in front of the house, then took a photo and sent it to threaten Mrs. M., at the same time texting that he would cut off his son's hand. Bao demanded that Mrs. M. come to see him.

On the morning of January 18, while Bao was in his rented room, Mrs. M. contacted him and asked to meet him and pick up his grandchild. Bao continued to threaten to kill his eldest son and demanded that by 2 p.m. that same day, Mrs. M. must transfer the full 60 million VND into his bank account.

After that, Bao received 2 million VND that Mrs. M. asked him to transfer. However, because he had not received the full 60 million VND, Bao continued to lie about his second son's death. Feeling resentful of her unfilial son, Mrs. M. reported it to the police.
