Tropical storm Kong-rey has strengthened into a super typhoon, threatening to bring heavy rains and strong winds to many northern areas of the country, the Philippine National Weather Service said.
The warning came as the Philippine Department of National Defense reported 20 more deaths from flooding and massive landslides caused by Typhoon Trami, bringing the total death toll from the storm to 145.
While rescue workers race against time to search for missing people, restore roads and bridges, and distribute food and clothing to thousands of people displaced by Typhoon Trami, the Philippine government is focusing on easing the impact of Super Typhoon Kong-rey, which hit earlier this week.
However, the government has yet to announce the number of deaths related to the storm.
On October 30, the Philippine National Weather Service determined that super typhoon Kong-rey was moving slowly in an area 350 km east of the country's Cagayan province with winds of up to 185 km/h and gusts of up to 230 km/h.
According to the agency, many areas heavily affected by Typhoon Trami, including the Bicol region, are in the path of super typhoon Kong-rey.
In addition, this super typhoon also threatens Batanes province in the northernmost tip of the Philippines.
The agency added that super typhoon Kong-rey will be closest to Batanes province from the evening of October 30 to the morning of October 31 with its intensity near or reaching its peak.
Kong-rey, the 12th typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, is expected to move out of the country on the evening of October 31 or early morning of November 1.
