President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris called to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the recent presidential election.
According to The Guardian, Ms. Kamala Harris later gave a speech admitting defeat to supporters at Howard University in Washington DC. Ms. Harris said her heart was full of determination after losing to her opponent Donald Trump.
"Today, my heart is full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country, and full of determination. The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But ... the light of America's promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up. We must accept the results of this election."
"While I concede defeat in this election, I do not concede defeat in the fight that drove this campaign. It was a fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness and dignity for all people, a fight for the core ideals of our nation, ideals that reflect America at its best," Ms. Harris emphasized.
To young Americans watching, the vice president said, "It's okay to feel sad and disappointed. But know that it's going to be OK."
Kamala Harris conceded defeat after Trump won the key swing states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The White House said President Joe Biden spoke to Harris by phone to congratulate her on her historic campaign. He also called President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him and invite him to the White House.
"The president expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and emphasized the importance of uniting the country," the White House said, adding that the date of Trump's visit to the White House would be announced later.
According to the Trump campaign, Ms. Harris and President Joe Biden called to congratulate Mr. Trump. Ms. Harris told Mr. Trump that she would work with President Joe Biden to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
