Vietnam rises 4 places in world passport rankings

Vietnam ranks 88th in the world's most powerful passport rankings in 2023, up four places compared to 2022.

According to the latest announcement from the Henley Passport Index, Vietnam ranks 88th. Vietnamese citizens can travel to 55 destinations (Burundi in East Africa is the newest country) without a visa or only need an e-visa or a visa on arrival. At the end of 2022, Vietnam ranked 92nd.

Japan has the most powerful passport in the world. Its citizens can enter 193 destinations without a visa. South Korea and Singapore are second on the list, with 192 destinations that can be freely visited.

The top 8 rankings in the top 10 are Germany and Spain (190 destinations); Finland, Italy, Luxembourg (189 destinations); Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden (188); France, Ireland, Portugal, UK (187); Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, USA, Czech Republic (186); Australia, Canada, Greece, Malta (185); Hungary, Poland (184); Lithuania, Slovakia (183).

The names at the bottom of the rankings (from bottom to top) are: Afghanistan ranked 109th with 27 visa-free destinations; Iraq ranked 108th (29 destinations), Syria (30), Pakistan (32), Yemen (34), Somalia (35), Nepal (38) and North Korea (40).

The Henley Index also said that, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global tourism is now at nearly 75% of pre-pandemic levels.

The Henley Passport Index is a ranking by the global residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley & Partners, headquartered in London, England. Statistics are conducted on 199 passports and 227 countries and territories worldwide, updated quarterly. The assessment is based on exclusive data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 2006. For each visa-free destination, that country's passport will be awarded one point.
