The closing ceremony and awards ceremony of the Vietnam Film Festival ended with the unsurprising victories of Glorious Ashes, You and Trinh, Those Children in the Mist...
Mr. Duong Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, was present to perform the ceremony of receiving the flag to host Ho Chi Minh City - the venue for the 24th Vietnam Film Festival in 2025.
At 8:00 p.m. on November 25, the closing ceremony and awards ceremony of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival (2023) took place at Dalat Opera House, the first opera house in Da Lat City with a capacity of 825 seats.
The film "Glorious Ashes" won the Golden Lotus award in the feature film category. This result is not surprising because although it did not achieve high revenue, the film received many positive responses from experts and audiences; at the same time, it won the highest award at the Three Continents Film Festival in France, the 2023 Golden Kite Award. Receiving the award, director Bui Thac Chuyen shared the difficulties of filmmakers after the COVID-19 period. He also thanked the organizers for supporting the country's film production industry and the friendly and hospitable city of Da Lat.
Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department Tran Thanh Lam and People's Artist Nhu Quynh presented the prestigious Golden Lotus Award to "Those Children in the Mist" in the documentary category. Director Ha Le Diem went on stage to receive the award with the parents of Ma Thi Di - the main character in the film, traveling from Sa Pa (Lao Cai) to Da Lat. This victory was not unexpected as previously, Ha Le Diem's film had "bombed" with many notable awards.
Director Victor Vu and actress Dinh Ngoc Diep presented the Silver Lotus Award to “people”: Oh Mom, Day Butterfly, Dao, Pho and Piano and Em and Trinh (feature film); Smile; Do Do's Grandmother (animation); Sunken Garbage (scientific film); Two Hands, Forever Blue Hanoi Sky - The Sky of Peace (documentary). Dao, Pho and Piano is the only state-ordered film representative to win an award in the feature film category.
The jury awards were given to the films Con Nhót mot chong (feature film); Road to peace, Nguoi oi, dung khoc cuoc duong (documentary); Cay guava thien duong, Nu tuong Me Linh (animated film); Dat loc van, Decoding traces of the fire (scientific film).
Director Phan Gia Nhat Linh (film Em va Trinh) received the most special award of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival - the Majestic Highlands award from Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee for a film set in Lam Dong.
Thai Hoa won the Best Actor in a Feature Film award for the film Con Nhót nhớt chồng but was absent, so actor Tiến Luật accepted the award instead. Meanwhile, Đinh Y Nhung and Mai Cát Vi both received the Best Actress award for their performances in Mẹ ơi, nhau nhau. The film tells a heartbreaking, somewhat dark but beautiful and pure story about a 36-year-old mother with cerebral palsy named Đẹp (played by Đinh Y Nhung) and her 10-year-old daughter named Buồn (played by Mai Cát Vi) who are suddenly separated. Đinh Y Nhung shared with reporters right after receiving the award that this was the most special role in her career. “I lived my life with Đẹp, my heart ached for Đẹp... and I was also psychologically haunted by Đẹp,” she said. Mai Cát Vi “didn’t believe she could win such an important award because the other uncles and aunts acted much better; if I won the award, it would only be because I was lucky.” Previously, Mai Cat Vi was the youngest actress to win the 2019 Golden Lotus Award in the Best Supporting Actress category at the age of 10.
Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Feature Film were awarded to Le Cong Hoang (Ranging Ashes) and singer and actress Bui Lan Huong (Em va Trinh). Bui Lan Huong was absent, so director Nguyen Quang Dung represented her to receive the award.
The Best Director award went to film directors Bui Thac Chuyen (feature film Glorious Ashes), Ha Le Diem (documentary film Children in the Mist), Nguyen Thu (scientific film Polluted Land), Nguyen Quang Trung (animated film Smile). Director Ha Le Diem was in Da Lat on the evening of November 25 to receive the Best Director award in the documentary category. Ha Le Diem said this year was a year of victory, luck and many surprises for Diem personally and for the film Children in the Mist in general. "The happiest thing is that through this, the audience for documentary films has expanded and the audience has realized that documentaries are not as picky as people think."
Director Luu Huynh (Mom, here's the Butterfly) won the Best Screenplay Award. Also in this category were author Dang Thi Linh (documentary Hai ban tay), author Trinh Quang Bach (science film Ho den), author Nguyen Quang Thieu (animated film Cay guava thien duong).
Cinematographer K'Linh continued to "win" the award for Best Cinematography (shared with Nguyen Phan Linh Dan for the film The Girl from the Past). This is the first time in the history of Vietnamese cinema that the award for Best Cinematography has been given to a woman. Sharing with reporters, K'Linh said that the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival is a national-scale film event, and artists who receive awards naturally feel honored and happy when their contributions are recognized; however, he still hopes that there will be more young people who shine in this category.
The award for Best Debut Director (feature film) went to Andy Nguyen for Fanti and the award for Best Visual Effects (feature film) went to the film The Girl from the Past.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Vi Kien Thanh - Director of the Department of Cinema, Head of the Organizing Committee of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival - generally assessed that this year's film festival brought artistic inspiration, excitement and impression to film artists and audiences because this was a festival with the largest number of participating films ever.
Regarding the feature film genre - the genre that receives public attention at film festivals, Mr. Thanh said:
"This year's festival has many good feature films, with improved artistic quality, many innovations in cinematic language, and many unique discoveries in how to tell a story.
The film crew from producers, screenwriters, directors, actors, cameramen, musicians, sound and editors are increasingly professional.

According to the Director of the Department of Cinema, the 16 feature films in the competition have diverse and rich content and forms of expression.
Many films have good ideological content, attractive artistic expression, aiming at humanistic values through the character system; exploiting beauty, kindness and especially delving into the beauty of the Vietnamese soul and Vietnamese people; together with the setting, music and sound, creating a work imbued with Vietnamese cultural identity.
Regarding the documentary genre, "the quality of the films is quite consistent and reveals a new filmmaking style approaching the language of world documentary cinema, showing new prospects for international integration in the documentary field, and the emergence of a new creative trend in documentaries," said Mr. Thanh.
Actress Kaity Nguyen (The Last Wife)
According to Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival demonstrates the spirit of overcoming difficulties after the COVID-19 pandemic, the determination of the Vietnamese film industry to implement the resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, to implement the conclusion of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the National Cultural Conference in 2021 and to implement the "Strategy for developing cultural industries to 2020, vision to 2030".
Mr. Thanh said: "The Vietnam Film Festival continues to affirm itself as a national art event with a highly professional mark, attracting a large number of film activists and artists, with many high-quality film works, contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity."

On the sidelines of the closing night of the Vietnam Film Festival, People's Artist Dao Ba Son - head of the jury for feature films - discussed that it is difficult to talk about whether there is a balance between films that have been released in theaters, or state films that have not been released in theaters.
Each film group meets its own criteria and has and will have its own rewards, appropriate to the efforts of the entire crew.
With box office movies, the biggest reward is public recognition and revenue.
With art films, it is the appreciation of artistic content by professionals. Even in the world, finding a balance in awarding awards is really difficult.
The art council may appreciate it but the box office may not consider it a good sign and vice versa. At the Vietnam Film Festival, we award films that have made a breakthrough and have an influence on the development of cinema in the future."
