In a video posted on the internet on June 17, these groups said the cyber attack was a response to the West providing weapons to Ukraine.

"This is not a DDoS attack, the game is over. We call on all active groups to engage in sabotage against the European banking system," an unnamed representative of the Killnet group said in the video.

Meanwhile, hacker group Anonymous Sudan warned: "More European banks will be targeted, and we will attack mercilessly."

Killnet's leader - who goes by the alias Killmilk - confirmed to Lenta.ru news agency that preparations for the cyberattack are underway and the action will begin within 48 hours.

IT experts warn that, in addition to direct attacks on banks, hackers could potentially target the global interbank system SWIFT. However, they doubt such an attack would be successful.

"It's hard to say how seriously we should take it. Anonymous Sudan and Killnet are involved in DDoS attacks. Their attacks have been unsuccessful, or have had minimal impact. However, it's still worth taking precautions," said Daan Keuper, a senior researcher at Dutch cybersecurity firm Computest.

IT expert Yevgeny Gorbov also said that the large-scale attack that the hacker groups launched is unlikely to succeed due to the layers of protection involved in the banking system.

"To carry out a cyber attack on the banking system in Europe, you first have to penetrate the system. Everything is controlled by a series of data centers, and attacking one of them will not solve anything. Even if one of them is forced to temporarily stop working, the banking system will continue to operate. It is possible that a few banks will be attacked, but it is unlikely to lead to very serious consequences," Mr. Gorbov said.

According to several media reports, the Killnet hacker group was recently behind the intrusions into several NATO websites, FBI databases, and the outage at Lufthansa airline.
