According to SpaceX's announcement on August 13, the project, called "Fram2" (named after a 19th-century polar exploration ship), is expected to last from 3 to 5 days.
This is a private flight paid for by Mr. Chun Wang (Malta nationality) - a leading businessman in the bitcoin field. The contract value has not been announced yet.
Mr. Chun Wang will travel with three polar experts, including Norwegian filmmaker Jannicke Mikkelsen, German roboticist Rabea Rogge and polar explorer Eric Philips (Australia).
Many satellites have flown over the poles, but because the Earth rotates, reaching these poles can be more energy-intensive, while radiation can also be a concern, according to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell.
Meanwhile, information posted on the Fram 2 project website said: "To date, the largest manned space flight to achieve an inclination angle was the former Soviet Union's Vostok 6 flight, at an angle of 65 degrees." Scientists cannot observe the polar regions from the International Space Station (ISS).
The Fram2 project is expected to use a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft equipped with an observation dome. According to the company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, this spacecraft will fly at an altitude of 425 - 450 km.
SpaceX has conducted 13 manned space flights in the past four years. In addition to flying NASA astronauts to the ISS, SpaceX also operates a space tourism service, with the first flight scheduled for 2021, called "Inspiration4", funded by American billionaire Jared Isaacman.
On August 26, SpaceX will also launch a private Polaris Dawn flight, carrying four crew members - including billionaire Jared Isaacman - into space. One of the goals of this flight is to conduct the first private spacewalk.
