In an interview with CNN, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said this was the worst blizzard in the history of the region. The victims of the blizzard in Erie County mostly died in their cars or on the road. Heavy snowfall reduced visibility on the roads to zero, and transformer stations were frozen. Even ambulances and rescue vehicles were stuck in the snow.
Similar conditions were reported in Buffalo. The city near the Canadian border was one of the areas hardest hit by the storm. Road workers were working to restore roads after the worst snowstorm in 45 years left many drivers stranded in their cars.
Earlier, the US National Weather Service (NWS) said the terrible snowstorm had seriously affected tens of millions of people during Christmas. According to statistics from the flight tracking website Flightaware.com, the severe weather has caused more than 15,000 flights to be canceled in the past few days. On December 26 alone, 1,600 flights were canceled. It is forecasted that most of the eastern US will remain in a state of deep cold through December 26 before the weather becomes milder on December 27.
