South Korea's Samsung Electronics said on August 6 that it has begun mass production of the thinnest mobile DRAM chip, LPDDR5X DRAM, designed specifically for on-device artificial intelligence (AI).
The new 12-nanometer LPDDR5X chips, available in 12GB and 16GB capacities, are just 0.65mm tall and are the thinnest LPDDR DRAM chips yet, according to Samsung Electronics. The new chips, which stack four layers of 12nm DRAM dies, are 9% thinner and have 21.2% higher heat resistance than the previous generation.
Samsung says its ultra-thin LPDDR5X DRAM chips can create more space inside mobile devices, enabling high-performance applications and advanced features like AI.
Previously, in April, Samsung launched the 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM. Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Bae Yong-Cheol affirmed: "LPDDR5X DRAM sets a new standard for high-performance on-device AI solutions, providing not only superior LPDDR performance but also advanced thermal management."
