Every year, Mr. Vu Duc Duc in Chi Lang Nam commune (Thanh Mien) earns a profit of 180-200 million VND.

In 2016, during a visit to some good production and business models in Bac Giang province organized by the Chi Lang Nam Commune Farmers' Association, Mr. Duc realized that raising pigeons was not difficult and brought high economic efficiency. He used all his family's capital to buy 200 pairs of pigeons and build cages with a total cost of nearly 100 million VND. Thanks to his mastery of pigeon raising techniques, Mr. Duc's model has grown more and more. From the initial pairs of parent birds, he has now built 300 cages with a total flock of about 600 pigeons.

Mr. Duc said that he chose the Vietnamese pigeon breed, which, despite its light weight, reproduces very well. From the initial flock of parent pigeons, he learned and multiplied the flock to raise, saving costs and effort. Currently, on average, he sells more than 300 pigeons to traders each month at a stable price of 170,000 - 200,000 VND/pair. In addition to selling commercial pigeons, Mr. Duc also sells breeding pigeons to people in the commune and neighboring localities. He is also willing to share his experience in raising and caring for pigeons with those in need.

Mr. Duc also pays special attention to disease prevention for pigeons. According to Mr. Duc, pigeons often suffer from diseases such as crop fungus, typhoid, feather loss, coccidiosis... if not detected promptly, the whole flock can be easily damaged. Therefore, he has improved his diet and care regimen to increase the resistance of his pigeons. Every month, he supplements vitamins, minerals and disease prevention medicine for pigeons. On the floor and around the cage, he sprinkles lime powder to both prevent disease and keep the cage dry and clean. In addition, he also installs a ventilation system and automatic water troughs to help pets avoid the heat in the summer.

Because pigeons are rich in nutrients and can be processed into many dishes, they are popular in the market. Mr. Duc's pigeon farm is always out of stock. "On average, every 45 days, pigeons will lay eggs once (1-2 eggs) and it takes about 20 days for the baby pigeons to be ready for sale. To create a brand, I use rice and corn as the main food, so the pigeon meat is tougher and more fragrant. Every year, I supply the market with about 3,500 pigeons, earning a profit of 180-200 million VND/year," Mr. Duc shared.

Currently, in Chi Lang Nam commune, there are about 10 households raising pigeons on a large scale with a total flock of over 6,000 birds, mainly concentrated in Trieu Duong village. Although the commercial pigeon farming model is not new, it brings high economic efficiency to the farming households. "Mr. Vu Duc Duc's family is one of the first households in the commune to successfully build a commercial pigeon farming model after a field trip to Bac Giang. Thanks to the high economic efficiency, the association has introduced and replicated this model in the commune," said a representative of the Chi Lang Nam Commune Farmers' Association.
