Editor's note: On the afternoon of June 2, after learning that the poem "Hat gao lang ta" (Our Village's Rice Grain) was included in the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in Hai Duong province for the 2024-2025 school year and being requested by a reporter, poet Tran Dang Khoa (from Nam Sach, Hai Duong), Vice President of the Vietnam Writers' Association, expressed his thoughts on his brainchild and the province's exam. Hai Duong Newspaper respectfully introduces it to readers.
I think this year's 10th grade entrance exam is very good. Good because of its richness and diversity. There is both poetry and prose. There is also an essay section. The required content is not difficult, any student who is willing to study and has average ability can do the test right away. But writing well is not simple.
The part that concerns me is the poem.Rice of our village. This poem is very popular, and has become a song of the same name composed by musician Tran Viet Binh, so many students know it by heart. The poem talks about the hardships of farmers growing rice during the most difficult years of the country. I also talked about this poem in detail in the more than 60-minute program of journalist Phan Dang on social networks. That is all about Our Village Rice, including the stories surrounding this poem. The exam only closed with very small and specific requirements in two excerpts: Identify the poetic form: It is a 4-word poem, each paragraph has 4 lines. There are also passages longer than 4 lines because the content needs to be expanded.
The second requirement is to find images and words in the article, which is also easy, because the author has suggested quite a lot in the two excerpts: from the alluvium of Kinh Thay River, the fragrant lotus scent in the lake, to the mother's singing, so there is both reality and spirit. Regarding natural conditions, the storm in July is the month that often has big storms, the rain in March signals the beginning of summer, there are extreme states such as thunder and lightning, especially lightning, which can easily cause accidents for farmers... Then the sun in June is so fierce that the water in the fields is hot, fish die, even fish that can withstand the heat, and crabs with claws can come up to the shore... while workers have to go down to the fields to plant rice... Therefore, to produce rice, farmers work extremely hard. That is why our folk song has a saying about rice grains cooked in rice:"Flexible" fragrant one grain(but)bitter(arrive)manyyesn" is because of that.
The third requirement is also very simple: the effect of repetitions. For example: Lots of the word Có. Có (alluvial taste), Có (July storm), Có (March rain)… The use of repetitions like that is to emphasize the merit of farmers, many times, in many jobs, in many circumstances, at many times… reminding us to appreciate the workers and to appreciate the rice grain even more, it is not by chance that the author calls it GOLDEN GRAIN.
And so, the exam has a fairly broad universality, ensuring to meet the needs of average students, but still has some suggestions for good and excellent students. Such an exam is good!
