Astronauts from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) will conduct two spacewalks this month, to conduct scientific research and perform maintenance work on the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA announced on October 4 that NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara will perform two spacewalks on October 12 and October 20. ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will join Loral O'Hara on the first day, while NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli will join on the second day.
During the spacewalk on October 12, the two astronauts will leave the Quest airlock, an area on the ISS that allows astronauts to open doors to space, and collect samples to analyze whether microorganisms can survive outside the orbital complex.
During the October 20 spacewalk, astronauts will remove a faulty electronics box from the ISS's communications antenna and replace a bearing on the gantry used to direct solar energy.
