Malaysia to hold vote of confidence in Prime Minister in August

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling coalition will face its first confidence vote in August with the participation of six key states.

At a press conference, the chairman of the National Election Commission of Malaysia, Abdul Ghani Salleh, said that six states, including Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, will participate in the vote on August 12. Prime Minister Anwar's coalition currently holds power in three of the six states. In this vote, the issues of concern to the people are the country's slowing economic growth and the rising cost of living.

While the regional polls will not directly affect Prime Minister Anwar’s two-thirds majority in parliament, any significant defeat for the ruling coalition could cast doubt on his leadership and weaken the foundation of the coalition that came to power after a divisive and competitive general election in November 2022. The vote will pit Prime Minister Anwar’s progressive, multi-ethnic coalition against the conservative Muslim alliance of former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
