Malaysian authorities have announced a halving of highway tolls for private cars nationwide during the two peak days of the 2025 Lunar New Year.
The 50% reduction in highway tolls is effective from 12:01 a.m. on January 27 to 11:58 p.m. on January 28, and is only applicable to category 1 vehicles, i.e. private cars, and is applied at all toll booths across Malaysia on the occasion of the 2025 Lunar New Year.
The policy does not apply to vehicles passing through border checkpoints, including Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Tanjung Kupang in Johoh, Malaysian Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said on January 24.
“This is a continuation of Malaysia’s festive highway toll subsidy scheme for four major festive seasons from 2023. The government will have to offset RM20.08 million (about US$4.5 million) for this toll reduction policy,” said Mr Linggi.
The Malaysian minister advised highway users to plan their travel based on the government's toll rebate program and comply with the travel time advisories (TTAs) that have been issued.
Malaysia is a multi-racial country, with the Chinese forming one of the largest communities. Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays in the country.
