Expectations from Kinh Mon Onion and Garlic Harvest Festival

For many years, Kinh Mon town has been a large onion and garlic granary in the North with an area of ​​about 4,000 hectares. The average output is 100,000 tons/year, with a revenue of 1,500 billion VND/year. Onions and garlic are the main crops, contributing nearly 60% of the agricultural, forestry and fishery production value of the town.

However, the consumption of onions and garlic in recent years has not escaped the situation of "good harvest, low price". Raw onion and garlic products are mainly brought by small traders to traditional markets, without the opportunity to reach many processing enterprises, and have not had the opportunity to be deeply processed into high-value products. Onion and garlic products of Kinh Mon have not developed commensurate with the potential and strengths of the locality.

Due to the favorable land and climate, along with the farming experience of the people, Kinh Mon onions and garlic are famous for their beautiful appearance, large, firm bulbs, spicy and aromatic taste. "Kinh Mon onions and garlic can be compared with other key agricultural products of Hai Duong province such as Thanh Ha lychee and Cam Giang carrots, but this brand is not known by many people," said Mr. Truong Duc San, Deputy Secretary of the Town Party Committee, Chairman of the Town People's Committee, Head of the Steering Committee for the 2024 Kinh Mon Town Onion and Garlic Harvest Festival.

That is also the reason why Kinh Mon organizes the onion and garlic harvest festival. The festival is expected to open a channel for trade promotion and brand promotion for Kinh Mon onions and garlic. When more people know about it, the consumption will be better. In addition, the signing of a memorandum of understanding and consumption of onions and garlic between the locality and businesses at the event helps Kinh Mon onions and garlic to be guaranteed output, avoid price fluctuations and have the opportunity to be deeply processed into high-value products. The festival is like a boost, promoting the development of Kinh Mon onions and garlic.

During a recent trip to Kinh Mon, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that the upcoming Kinh Mon Onion and Garlic Harvest Festival is like a cool breeze, opening up a much larger value space for onions and garlic.

“The concentrated zoning, creating value chains from varieties, cultivation processes, harvesting, post-harvesting, preservation, preliminary processing, deep processing, packaging with traceable labels will bring higher value. That is the agricultural economic thinking,” Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan suggested for agriculture in Kinh Mon.

Ready for the festival

The 2024 Kinh Mon Town Onion and Garlic Harvest Festival will be held in Cau Yen field (Hiep Hoa commune). As this is an important event, with the meaning of raising the value of onions and garlic, up to now, all preparations have been completed, ready for the big festival.

Mr. Truong Duc San, Chairman of Kinh Mon Town People's Committee added that immediately after having the plan, the Town People's Committee established a Steering Committee, sub-committees on content - festival decoration; propaganda - reception - logistics; security and order. The tasks have been assigned specifically and in detail to each sub-committee and department.

Hiep Hoa Commune is the place where the event takes place, so the preparation work here must be carried out carefully and thoughtfully. Mr. Nguyen Van Quan, Chairman of Hiep Hoa Commune People's Committee shared: "We have promoted so that each person understands the importance of the festival, and is aware of spreading the image of the fertile Kinh Mon land, not only with onions and garlic but also many precious products, and the hospitable and friendly Kinh Mon people".

The area where the onion and garlic festival will take place has completed the installation of the main stage and a tent with a capacity of 250 people. The ground is leveled with sand, wooden embankments, and covered with grass. In particular, the festival area is decorated with colorful flags and flowers. The People's Committee of Hiep Hoa commune mobilized human resources from organizations, planted 300 red flags along the main roads, road 389B, areas with houses and businesses, and hung the national flag.

To prepare for the onion and garlic harvesting experience competition taking place in the festival, Mr. Pham Minh Tuan in An Bo village (Hiep Hoa commune) and 5 team members were informed about the regulations and practiced. “We are ready for the competition in the festival. This is an event we are looking forward to and have high expectations for. The festival shows the attention of the local government, encourages our spirit, and helps us have more motivation in working and producing,” said Mr. Tuan.
