On the morning of September 9, Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C across the Red River connecting Tam Nong district and Lam Thao district of Phu Tho province collapsed.
Mr. Quach Hai Ly - Chairman of Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province said that at around 10:00 a.m. on September 9, Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C across the Red River connecting Tam Nong district and Lam Thao district of this province collapsed.
According to preliminary reports, 10 cars, 2 motorbikes and 13 people were swept away. The forces are currently handling the situation quickly.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Vice Chairman of Tam Nong District People's Committee, said that up to now, 3 victims have been rescued.
Phong Chau Bridge was built with a steel truss structure, nearly 380 m long. The project was inaugurated in 1995 and put into use in 1996 with a design load of H18-X60 including 8 spans, including 4 simple spans of T33m girder made of prestressed reinforced concrete, three steel truss spans (66m + 64m + 80m) and one simple span of T21m girder made of normal reinforced concrete.
In 2013, the bridge was severely damaged and needed to be repaired. In 2022, voters in Phu Tho province proposed to study investment in upgrading or building a new bridge to replace Phong Chau bridge. At that time, the Ministry of Transport said that conditions could not be met immediately, so it directed the Vietnam Road Administration to strengthen maintenance and repair.
