At least 86 people died in boat sinking in Congo

At least 86 people have died and the death toll is expected to rise after a boat sank earlier in the evening on the Kwa River, a tributary of the Congo River.

On June 11, local sources said a boat sank the previous evening on the Kwa River, one of the tributaries of the Congo River, in Mai-Ndombe province, western Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 86 people, including 21 children.

According to sources, the accident occurred near Lediba village at around 11pm (local time) on June 10.

The boat was en route to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, from the town of Mushie.

Sources said 185 people had been rescued so far, warning the death toll could rise. The number of passengers on board was not yet known.
