The IRGC said the Hamas leader was killed by a warhead containing about 7kg of explosives, launched from outside the guest house where he lived in Tehran.
On August 3, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.
In a statement, the IRGC said the Hamas leader was killed by a short-range projectile containing about 7kg of explosives. The projectile was launched from outside, targeting the guest house where Mr. Ismail Haniyeh lived in Tehran, causing a large explosion.
Meanwhile, the New York Times (USA) on August 3 quoted informed sources as saying that Iran had arrested more than 20 people in the investigation of the attack that killed the Hamas leader.
Among those arrested were senior intelligence officers, military officers and staff at the IRGC-run guesthouse in Tehran, where the attack took place. The IRGC's special intelligence unit has taken over the investigation and is hunting for the suspects.
Iran and Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the attack. Israel neither admitted nor denied the accusation. No individual or organization has yet claimed responsibility.
The incident came just hours after a top commander of Lebanon's Hezbollah Islamist movement was killed in an Israeli strike on the capital Beirut in response to an earlier attack on the Golan Heights.
These moves have further escalated tensions in the region since the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas last October.
