On August 3, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said it would close its embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut due to concerns about spreading conflict in the Middle East.

The situation in the Middle East is becoming tense after the political leader of the Islamic movement Hamas Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran.

The incident came just hours after a top commander of Lebanon's Hezbollah force was killed in an Israeli strike on the capital Beirut in response to an earlier rocket attack on the Golan Heights.

The United Nations has called on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid further conflict.

The ministry is also planning to move the embassy in Beirut to another location, Mr. Billstrom said, without giving details. The decision will initially apply to this August but could be extended depending on the security situation.

In addition, the Swedish Foreign Ministry called on thousands of its citizens to leave Lebanon as soon as possible by any means possible.

According to the ministry's figures, up to 10,000 Swedish citizens may have traveled to Lebanon this summer, despite authorities issuing a travel warning for Lebanon since last October.

Many airlines continue to suspend flights to and from Lebanon

Meanwhile, for many days now, airlines have decided to avoid the airspace of Lebanon and Iran, and canceled flights to these two countries due to concerns about possible conflict in the region.

Lufthansa announced on August 3 that it would suspend flights to Beirut until August 5. The same day, the Franco-Dutch airline group Air France-KLM said flights to Beirut operated by Air France and low-cost carrier Transavia France would remain suspended until at least August 6, citing security concerns in the region.

The resumption of flights to Beirut will depend on the assessment of the situation, an Air France-KLM spokesperson said, noting that passengers with existing reservations can change their flight tickets at no additional cost. However, flights to Tel Aviv will resume.

Air France and Transavia France suspended flights to Beirut for the first time on July 29, a day after Israel said it would respond to a rocket attack from Lebanon on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights that killed 12 people.

The statement came even as Lebanon's Hezbollah force denied any involvement in the attack.
