Apple and Samsung dominate the Top 10 best-selling phones in the first quarter of 2024, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max being the best-selling product.
According to statistics released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple's top-end iPhone model accounted for 4.4% of the global smartphone market share in the first three months of the year. The next four positions belong to the iPhone 15 (4.3%), iPhone 15 Pro (3.7%), iPhone 14 (1.9%) and Galaxy S24 Ultra (1.9%), respectively.
Since its launch in September 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has held the number one spot for two consecutive quarters. However, according to Counterpoint, this is the first time an Apple Pro Max model has achieved this position in the first quarter of the year. This is considered an "off-season" period for Apple when users tend to buy cheap iPhones. For example, last year, the iPhone 14 was the leading product with 4.7% market share.
"This reflects the growing trend of users preferring high-end phones," Counterpoint experts concluded.
This trend is also true for Samsung. Last year, the company's best-selling phone during this period was the Galaxy A13 in the low-end segment, with sales one and a half times higher than the S23 Ultra. This year, that position belongs to the S24 Ultra.
According to experts, users are willing to pay more for premium features. On the iPhone Pro line, there are improvements to the Dynamic Island display, advanced chipset, titanium frame and telephoto camera, while the S24 Ultra line is new design, materials, and the integration of artificial intelligence.
In addition, smartphones no longer make too big a difference in features after each generation. Users have less need to upgrade to new devices, so they often choose high-end phones to be able to use for a long time.
Counterpoint statistics also show that the smartphone market is improving, with sales increasing 6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 296.9 million units. Apple sold high-end products well, but still faced difficulties with total revenue falling 11%. In its financial report on May 2, the company also admitted that iPhone revenue reached 46 billion USD, down 10%.
