Indonesia may play a friendly match with the world's No. 7 team, the Netherlands, in 2025, at the invitation of billionaire Erick Thohir.

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) president Thohir made the announcement after visiting the headquarters of the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) on January 27. "PSSI and KNVB discussed many issues, including how to develop young talents and women's football," Thohir wrote on Instagram. "We are trying to find ways to train quality players for the future. PSSI also invited the Dutch national team to Indonesia for a friendly match."

Since taking over as PSSI President in 2023, Thohir has promised to bring top-notch friendly matches to Indonesia. In June 2023, they lost 0-2 to reigning World Cup champions Argentina in a friendly match at Bung Karno Stadium. However, Argentina was without stars Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria.

Thohir has not confirmed whether the Netherlands have agreed to play a friendly. Indonesia do not have an opponent for the two matches in September 2025, but the Netherlands may have to play World Cup qualifiers at that time. The European representatives may only have free time in March and June.

Indonesia will play their final four Group C matches in the 2026 World Cup Asian Qualifiers Round 3 in March and June. In Group C, Japan is almost certain to secure one of the two direct spots in the finals. Indonesia is competing for the remaining spot, or at least two tickets to the fourth qualifying round. The fourth qualifying round will begin in October 2025, so it will not be easy for Indonesia to meet the Netherlands.

Indonesia currently has more than 10 players born in the Netherlands. For example, right-back Eliano Reijnders plays for Indonesia, the younger brother of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. Several Indonesian players have also represented the Netherlands at youth level, including defenders Justin Hubner, Sandy Walsh, Calvin Verdonk, Kevin Diks, Mees Hilgers, midfielders Ivar Jenner and Thom Haye. Coach Kluivert is also a former Dutch international.

The Netherlands visited Southeast Asia to play a friendly against Thailand in Bangkok in 2007, with the visitors winning 3-1. They also beat Indonesia 3-0 in a 2013 friendly in Jakarta.
