A baby girl was pulled from the rubble on February 9 after being buried for nearly 60 hours in a landslide in a village in the southern Philippines earlier this week.

The landslide killed at least 11 people and left more than 100 missing.

Sharing with the press, Davao de Oro province disaster response agency official Edward Macapili said rescuers in Masara village on Mindanao island found the girl while using shovels and bare hands to search for victims.

Mr Macapili said finding the girl alive after nearly 60 hours buried was a “miracle” that gave hope to rescuers.

The landslide occurred on the evening of February 6, destroying many houses and burying three buses and a passenger van waiting to pick up workers from a gold mine.

Rescuers are racing against time to search for survivors under thick layers of mud.

Heavy rains have been pouring down on many areas of Mindanao island for weeks, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate.

Landslides are a frequent hazard in the Philippines due to mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall, and widespread deforestation from mining, slash-and-burn agriculture, and illegal logging.
