A performance by students of Bui Thi Xuan Primary School (Da Nang) received backlash from many parents when they had students take off their coats in the cold weather.

On the afternoon of December 16, a post appeared on social media: “This morning, a festival took place at Bui Thi Xuan Primary School. There would be nothing worth mentioning if all the students were not forced to take off their coats and were left with only a thin t-shirt in the 18-degree weather. The teachers ignored the health of the students. Parents are very upset, so they flooded the school’s Facebook page to express their anger.”

Under the post, many parents disagreed with the school's disregard for students' health for their achievements.

Ms. Nguyen Tran Le Hong Trinh, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan Primary School, said that, implementing the official dispatch of the Department of Education and Training of Lien Chieu District, the school has developed a plan to organize activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army and organize the topic "I love my homeland's sea and islands" on the morning of December 16 in the school yard.

Because the seminar program included a school-wide performance, the team leader asked the students to take off their jackets to perform in a uniform that looked good with their class uniforms.

“In fact, at 7:30 a.m. on December 16 in the school yard, the weather was cold but more than 1,725 students participated in activities so their body temperatures increased. Many students took off their jackets and held them in their hands because they could not stand the heat,” Ms. Trinh explained.

According to the principal of Bui Thi Xuan Primary School, when the weather was not too cold, the delegates and students were ready. On the other hand, the activity had been carefully planned by the school, and was also an opportunity for students to gain more experience and better grasp knowledge about sea and island sovereignty, so the school's board of directors decided to continue the program as planned.

During the program, the school also required each teacher to closely follow the students, monitor their performance to ensure that the principle of not affecting their health was followed. The organizers shortened the performance. After that, the students were asked to put their coats back on and continue with other activities.

“The first thematic activity of the week on the morning of December 16 at the school took place completely, meeting the expectations of teachers, delegates and students. However, the unfortunate thing that happened beyond expectations was that some parents reported on social networks that students had to sit huddled in the cold to serve the school’s activities.

Through a comprehensive review of the incident, the school finds that parents' contributions are necessary to ensure safety during teaching and learning activities.

After receiving comments from parents, the school board met, re-evaluated and learned from the experience," said the principal of Bui Thi Xuan Primary School.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lich, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Lien Chieu district, said that after receiving the information, the department requested Bui Thi Xuan Primary School to report and explain specifically about the incident.

“After a comprehensive review of the incident and the school’s report, the Department of Education and Training found that parents’ feedback is necessary to ensure safety during teaching and learning activities. The Department has also requested the school’s board of directors to meet, re-evaluate and learn from the experience,” said Mr. Lich.
