Liu Yao, 12 years old, becomes a freshman this fall.

Liu Yao is a student at a middle school in Shanghai. He achieved an A in the early admission round of USTC after taking the aptitude test and interview, and meeting the minimum score of 305/750 in three subjects: Math, Literature, and English in the Gaokao (High School Exam).Gaokao).

The University of Science and Technology of China is currently ranked 57th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Domestically, USTC is part of the C9 group - the top 9 universities.

Liu Yao's mother said that the boy had the ability to study on his own since he was young. "He completes his homework every day. He has good concentration and often studies hard," she said.

After entering secondary school, Liu Yao's mother proactively sought out learning materials for her son. The boy was passionate about science, especially Math and Physics, and was particularly sensitive to numbers.

Teachers at the school also discovered Liu Yao's talent early on. The boy was given a roadmap to skip grades, learning natural sciences for high school and university. As a result, he was able to study in the same class as grade 12 students when he was only 12 years old.

Liu Yao then signed up for the USTC's young talent class in the hope of saving study time. "I won't have to go through three years of high school. Basically, I have mastered the knowledge of this level, although I am a bit weak in Literature," the male student said.

The mother said her child's learning still happened naturally. "We just support her interests and choices as much as possible, so she can find her own path through experience," she said.

In his spare time, Liu Yao likes to read science fiction novels, such as "The Three-Body Problem" by Liu Zixin, a famous Chinese writer.

USTC's young talent class is known as a gathering place for "geniuses" in China. Liu Yao said his parents will come to live with him to take care of him. The student currently has no specific plans for his major at university.
