North Korea-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty Officially Comes into Effect

The ceremony to exchange documents ratifying the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between North Korea and Russia, signed by the leaders of the two countries in Pyongyang (North Korea) in June this year, took place in the Russian capital Moscow.

North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Jong Gyu and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Yurievich Rudenko signed a protocol on the exchange of ratification instruments.

According to Article 22 of the treaty, the document will come into force on December 4, the date of exchange of ratification instruments. The Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation between the DPRK and Russia signed on February 9, 2000, has expired.

According to KCNA, the new treaty serves as a legal framework for realizing the plan to upgrade bilateral relations to a new strategic level and build a strong country, while resolutely protecting the regional and global security environment in line with common interests.

KCNA affirmed that the strong DPRK-Russia relations based on the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty will serve as a powerful security tool for promoting the welfare of the people of the two countries, easing regional tensions and ensuring international strategic stability, and will also serve as a powerful driving force for establishing an independent and just multipolar world order.
