South Korea's Marine Corps said on November 21 that it conducted a large-scale amphibious assault exercise involving thousands of troops, landing ships and helicopters, as Seoul steps up efforts to boost its combat readiness.

According to Yonhap news agency, the exercise will last for 6 days, starting from November 17 in Pohang, 262km southeast of Seoul.

About 3,400 marines and more than 30 amphibious assault vehicles participated in the event.

On November 21, the soldiers entered a phase considered to be decisive in the exercise, which included an amphibious assault exercise in coastal areas with landing ships, transport aircraft and helicopters under the support of naval warships and attack helicopters.

The South Korean Marine Corps said more than 10 naval vessels took part in the drill, including the ROKS Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin destroyer, to enhance joint combat capabilities.

The exercise coincides with the South Korean military's annual Hoguk defense exercise, which began on October 16 and is scheduled to end on November 22.
