On December 8, the Hamas Islamist movement called on the United Nations Security Council to help end the "brutal war" in Gaza that has killed more than 17,400 Palestinians after more than two months of fighting.

A statement from the Hamas Media Office said the movement calls on the Security Council, the international community and all countries in the world to end the current brutal war and save the Gaza Strip before it is too late.

Hamas made the statement just before the Security Council voted on a draft resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution was drafted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and received the approval of 13 out of 15 members of the Security Council.

The remaining two members were the US, which voted against, and the UK, which abstained.

The UAE expressed disappointment with the outcome and regretted the Security Council's failure to adopt a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
