Today, August 28, the People's Court of Hanoi sentenced defendant Nguyen Thanh Duy (born in 2003, in Thanh Oai) to 20 years in prison for the crime of "Murder".

Previously, on August 1, the Hanoi People's Court brought the case to trial and decided to return the case file for further investigation to verify whether the case still missed criminals.

According to the accusation, at about 9:30 p.m. on March 30, 2022, Mai Tien Dat (born in 2004, in Thanh Oai) was sitting drinking water on the 2nd floor of a lemon tea shop in Thanh Oai when he met Hoang Tien Dat (born in 2005, in Thanh Oai) who was also sitting drinking water with a friend.

Hoang Tien Dat walked over to where Mai Tien Dat was sitting, held up a phone with a photo of Pham Dinh Toan (born in 2005) and said: "Do you know this guy?" Mai Tien Dat recognized Toan as his friend so he replied: "This is my friend".

Hoang Tien Dat growled and said loudly: "Call this guy up here". Because he was afraid of being beaten by Hoang Tien Dat, Mai Tien Dat called Toan. While talking, Mai Tien Dat told Toan: "Come to Sun Tea to drink water, it seems like someone wants to beat you up".

Then, Toan and his friends Nguyen Dang Han (born in 2003) and Nguyen Thanh Duy (born in 2003) rode a motorbike to a lemon tea shop.

Here, Toan's group met 8 people from Hoang Tien Dat's group. At this time, Duy approached Hoang Tien Dat's group and said: "Who is going to beat my brother Toan?" Hoang Tien Dat stood up and replied: "I was going to beat him."

During the argument, Duy pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed Hoang Tien Dat in the left temple. Due to timely emergency care, Hoang Tien Dat did not die, but the victim suffered brain damage, resulting in hemiplegia, loss of speech and movement, and 91% health damage.

Dat was brought to court in a wheelchair by his parents. Once a healthy young man, Dat now depends on his relatives for all his activities.

At court, defendant Duy admitted to the crime and affirmed that he did not discuss it with anyone and that no one was his accomplice. While the Procuracy agreed with this view, the victim's family said that it was necessary to clarify whether the defendant had an accomplice or not.

Regarding the civilian side, the victim's family said that the family's economic conditions were already difficult, and now they had to take turns taking time off work, staying home to take care of and take their child for treatment, making them even more financially struggling.

In addition to the prison sentence, the Trial Panel also ordered the defendant to pay civil compensation of VND296 million and to provide VND3 million in monthly support for the victim until she recovers; and VND4.6 million per month for the victim's parents who are taking care of the victim.
