Reduce 1,000 hectares of winter-spring rice

The winter-spring rice area continued to decrease by about 1,000 hectares compared to last year's winter-spring crop as localities converted ineffective rice land to grow vegetables, fruit trees or other purposes.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Duong province deploys the production plan for the 2023 summer-autumn crop and the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop.

This year, Hai Duong strives to cultivate 53,500 hectares of crops, reducing 1,000 hectares of rice, and cultivating 9,500 hectares of summer-autumn vegetables, equivalent to the same period last year. In the winter crop, localities in the province strive to cultivate 21,000 hectares of winter vegetables, equivalent to the same period last year. This is the plan deployed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the conference on crop production in 2023 and winter crop production in 2023 - 2024 held on the afternoon of May 12.

The rice cultivation area has decreased due to many localities converting rice land to other purposes. Of which, 13,500 hectares of early-season rice, accounting for 25% of the area, are planted on high ground and harvested early before October 5, 2022 to switch to growing early winter crops. About 35,750 hectares of medium-season rice, accounting for about 67% of the area, are planted on high ground, low ground, and low ground. The remaining area is late-season rice, focusing on specialty glutinous rice varieties with high economic value.

For summer-autumn vegetables, localities promote the conversion of ineffective rice fields to vegetable cultivation for high economic efficiency and have contracts for product consumption. Support and expand the model of large-scale land accumulation for production, proactively providing land funds for early winter crop cultivation.

For winter crops, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that localities maintain and expand large-scale concentrated commodity production areas with favorable consumption markets such as onions, carrots, jicama, cabbage, etc. Focus on improving the quality and controlling pesticide residues for crops for export. Build brands and trace the origin to increase export output.
