On January 17, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the completion of inspections of the first group of 40 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.

The inspection was carried out after the incident on January 5 when an Alaska Airlines plane's fuselage broke apart while in flight, leading to a series of Boeing planes of this model being required to stop operating.

The FAA said late last week that it would review 40 of the 171 Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes it ordered grounded. The FAA will then review the results and determine whether it is safe to resume flying the planes.

In a new announcement, the FAA said it would carefully evaluate the data collected from the inspections before deciding whether to allow the planes to return to service. On January 17, the head of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA's safety director will also have to brief US senators on the inspection results.

Since last week, US airlines including Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have had to cancel hundreds of flights and have decided to cancel flights using the MAX 9 until January 17. These are the two airlines whose MAX 9 aircraft have completed inspections. Currently, these airlines have not officially commented on the new information.

On January 16, Boeing selected Navy Admiral Kirkland H. Donald to advise its CEO on improving quality control.
