Iranian authorities have ordered the closure of schools and government offices in at least 10 provinces to save energy as the country endures a severe cold snap.

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that government offices and schools in 10 provinces, including Lorestan, Semnan and Gilan, were closed and students were taught online. A day earlier, Iranian authorities had ordered similar measures in 20 provinces, but many reopened on February 9.

This is a measure that Iran often takes during winter when temperatures drop sharply. Over the past few days, frost has blanketed the entire northern half of the country, causing energy consumption to spike.

Temperatures in at least 19 provinces dropped to 0 degrees Celsius or below on February 9, bringing heavy snow and rain across the country, according to the weather agency. Some areas in the capital Tehran received up to 30 centimeters of snow overnight. The heavy snowfall has disrupted roads in 25 of Iran's 31 provinces, especially in the north and west. Authorities have advised people to avoid traveling in these areas for the next 24 hours.
