Applying to university, don't just base it on your grades

July 23, 2023 08:27

According to the schedule of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), candidates applying for university admission in 2023 will be able to register and adjust their wishes an unlimited number of times until 5:00 p.m. on July 30.

In reality, many candidates often base their application on their scores - that is, they see that their scores are suitable for a certain school or major, then they register, while they themselves do not carefully research those majors and schools, and when they actually start studying, they find that they are not suitable.

Forecasting the university admission scores this year, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh, Vice Principal of Phenikaa University, commented that based on the score distribution of this year's high school graduation exam, it can be seen that there is not much fluctuation compared to 2022. This year, schools have many different admission methods, and high school graduation exam scores are one of those methods. If we base too much on the score distribution, but the number of quotas equal to the high school graduation exam scores is different between schools and majors, then the score distribution may not have a big impact on the admission score.

It is predicted that the benchmark scores for each exam group will also fluctuate compared to 2022, but this change is not much. (Illustration photo)

"The benchmark scores will change, but it is important that candidates have a firm grasp of information about the schools and majors they intend to apply for; benchmark scores of recent years as a basis for consideration. At the same time, candidates also need to carefully consider the enrollment plan and the number of quotas for each school and major in 2023. Based on data from previous years, enrollment plans, score distribution, etc., candidates can make the choice that is right for them," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phu Khanh noted.

According to Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc, a Chemistry teacher in Hanoi, this year's score distribution is basically stable compared to 2022, of course there are still certain increases and decreases in some exam groups.

Specifically, the score distribution of block A has decreased slightly compared to 2022. Block C and A1 also have a slight decrease, while block B has a slight increase, block D remains relatively stable. This increase or decrease is not too much.

According to Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc, in the past 2 years, the admission methods of universities have become much more diverse, so the information from the score spectrum is only for reference. The increase or decrease in the standard scores of the majors is influenced by many other factors.

For 2023, the increase or decrease in the benchmark score also depends on other criteria such as whether the percentage of quotas for admission by high school graduation scores compared to the previous year is adjusted or not. If the percentage of this quota decreases significantly, the benchmark score may also increase, if the percentage of quotas is expanded, the benchmark score may decrease. In addition, the score range for block A may decrease slightly, block D remains the same, but there are schools where the benchmark score is applied to all exam blocks in the same code, so when the exam blocks are balanced, there is no major adjustment.

This year in particular, the bonus points from the 22.5 point mark will be gradually reduced linearly, so the higher the standard score of the previous year's majors, the more affected by the reduction in priority points by subject and region. Therefore, looking at the score spectrum, it feels like the standard score will increase, but in reality it may decrease.

"The most important thing you need to grasp is the principle of arranging your wishes in order to ensure that they are correct, your needs are met, as well as safety and certainty. The increase or decrease in the benchmark score will be a bit difficult to evaluate in detail. Each industry and each school has its own story and candidates should not rely too much on the score distribution," said Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc.

Informing candidates about how to register their wishes, Mr. Vu Khac Ngoc said that the first important thing is that candidates need to choose a group of majors that are suitable for their abilities. This is the most important issue. In reality, many candidates often base their application on their scores - that is, they see that their scores are suitable for a certain school or major, then they will register, while they themselves do not carefully research those majors and schools, and when they actually start studying, they find that they are not suitable.

"You should not only base it on your scores but also on other factors. These factors must come from yourself. You need to understand that when choosing a career or an environment to study, it is completely your choice, because you will be the one who goes to school and even after graduating, you will still work and be attached to that job for decades before retiring. You also need to put aside emotional thoughts, for example, seeing many friends choose this major, so you also want to choose it. You have to learn to understand yourself," emphasized teacher Vu Khac Ngoc.
