North Korean leader Kim Jong Un publicly revealed his daughter for the first time when his family visited the ICBM launch site on November 18.
North Korea launched the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 18, state news agency KCNA reported on November 19. The biggest surprise was the presence of Kim Jong Un's daughter - who has never appeared in public before. She wore a white shirt and accompanied Kim in photos at the ICBM launch site, according to Reuters.
His wife Ri Sol Ju and daughter stand next to Kim at the launch site, on November 18. "This is the first time we've seen Kim Jong Un's daughter at a public event. The fact that Kim has her out in public in this way shows that he has a certain relaxed attitude," said Michael Madden, a North Korea expert at the US-based Stimson Center.
Kim Jong Un and his daughter inspect an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Experts say Kim is believed to have three children, two girls and a boy. In 2013, former US basketball star Dennis Rodman revealed that the North Korean leader has a daughter named Ju Ae. Rodman told the Guardian that he spent time with Kim’s family and held the child during a trip to North Korea.
Mr Maiden said Ju Ae is currently around 12-13 years old. That means she will either enter university or do military service in the next four or five years. "This shows that she is being educated and trained to become a leader, maybe a central leader or a behind-the-scenes adviser like her aunt (Kim Jong Un's sister)," Mr Maiden predicted. In the photo, leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter watch the launch.
Madden added that the appearance of Kim's daughter this time shows the fourth generation of the father-son relationship, and reminds Pyongyang's core elite to prepare for the next generation. "Her presence is for the elite," he commented. In the photo, Kim supervises the ICBM launch site on November 18.
Ri Sol Ju's wife reacts while watching the ICBM launch. Ken Gause, a North Korea expert, told CNA: "Whenever Ri Sol Ju appears, it is accompanied by a strategic message. It could be to ease tensions or show the Kim family's solidarity during a difficult time internally."
Ri Sol Ju’s presence also fits with the trend of political “normalization” in Pyongyang, Gause added. Kim is pictured inspecting an ICBM on November 18.

North Korea's state news agency (KCNA) said the November 18 launch used a "new type of intercontinental ballistic missile".
Accordingly, the Hwasongpho-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was launched at Pyongyang International Airport and traveled at a maximum altitude of 6,040.9 km over a distance of 999.2 km before falling into the East Sea (Tokyo calls it the Sea of Japan).
