The Ministry of Education and Training has just issued new regulations on evaluating high school students, in which many subjects will not be graded.

In the 2021-2022 school year, grade 6 will have six subjects that will not be graded.

This content will be applied to grade 6 according to the new curriculum and textbooks this school year.

Accordingly, there are 6 subjects that will not be scored: Physical education, art, music, fine arts, local educational content, experiential activities, and career guidance will not be scored (both regular and periodic assessments), only evaluated by comments with 2 levels: passed and not passed.

The remaining subjects will be evaluated by scores, combined with comments. The evaluation is done by training scores corresponding to the learning requirements in the program; Training scores and learning scores are classified into 4 levels: Good, Fair, Passed, Unpassed.

The Circular officially takes effect from this new school year when applying the new curriculum and textbooks: The first year applies to grade 6 in the 2021-2022 school year; 2022-2023 for grades 7 and 10; 2023-2024 for grades 8 and 11; 2024-2025 for grades 9 and 12.

The Ministry of Education and Training also explains the assessment method by comments: According to the provisions of this circular, teachers use speaking or writing to comment on students' performance of training and learning tasks; comment on students' progress, outstanding advantages, and main limitations in the training and learning process; and evaluate students' training and learning results.

Students use speaking or writing to self-evaluate their performance in training and learning tasks, progress, outstanding strengths, and main limitations.

Parents, agencies, organizations and individuals involved in the student education process provide feedback on the student's performance in training and learning tasks.

Assessment by comments on students' training and learning results is used in regular assessment, periodic assessment through testing forms, assessing students' performance of training and learning tasks suitable to the characteristics of the subject.

As for the assessment by scores: Used in regular assessment, periodic assessment through testing forms, assessing the implementation of training and learning tasks of students in accordance with the characteristics of the subject.

Students who meet the following conditions will be promoted to the next grade or recognized as having completed the junior high school and high school program, including: The learning and training results of the entire school year are assessed at the level of Pass or higher; no more than 45 absences in a school year (calculated according to the education plan of 1 session/day as prescribed in the General Education Program, including authorized and unauthorized absences, continuous or intermittent absences).

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training only stipulated that students must have average or above academic performance and conduct; and must not miss more than 45 classes in a school year (with or without permission, continuously or multiple times combined).
