The final play-off round will determine all 36 teams in the 2024-2025 Champions League group stage, with the draw taking place today, August 29.
The last seven teams to win the play-off spot on the evening of August 28 include Young Boys (Switzerland), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia), Red Star Belgrade (Serbia), Sparta Prague (Czech), Salzburg (Austria) and Lille (France).
This is the second time in three years that Türkiye has not had a representative in the Champions League group stage. Norway also has no club competing this year, after 17 consecutive seasons of having a representative.
Aston Villa, Bologna, Brest and Girona are in the Champions League for the first time, excluding the C1 Cup. Brest and Girona are in a UEFA tournament for the first time. The group stage will have representatives from 16 national federations, of which Germany and Italy have the most with 5 representatives.
From this season, teams will no longer be divided into multiple groups. Instead, all 36 teams will be able to meet each other in the league-style group stage. Initially, UEFA will divide the 36 teams in the group stage into four seeding pots, according to their coefficients.
When a team is drawn manually from the first group, the computer will immediately identify eight different opponents. The two conditions for this determination are: teams from the same country will not meet each other and a team can only face a maximum of two opponents from the same country.
With the new format, the number of group stage matches increases from 96 to 144, and there will be more key matches as teams from the same group will also meet. Therefore, there are two rounds of group stage matches that extend into January 2025.
The draw for the 2024-2025 Champions League group stage will take place in Monaco at 11pm today, August 29, Hanoi time. The first matches will take place on September 17.
