Lending a bank account and then embezzling 1 billion VND, Hoang Thi Mai Phuong in Ninh Giang town received 13 years in prison.

According to the indictment, on October 20, 2022, Ms. PTT in Pham Ngu Lao ward (Hai Duong city) completed loan procedures at a bank with a branch in Hai Duong.

To legalize the disbursement procedure, Ms. T. asked Phuong to lend her bank account information. Phuong and Ms. T. signed a contract to buy and sell wooden furniture (the sale was not real). Ms. T. would authorize the payment, requesting the bank to disburse 1.3 billion VND to Phuong's bank account, then Phuong would transfer the money back to Ms. T.

On March 16, 2023, Ms. T. went to the bank to complete the procedures to request a loan disbursement of 1.3 billion VND to the account under Phuong's name. Afterwards, Ms. T. contacted Phuong to inform her that she had borrowed money and transferred it to Phuong's account. Ms. T. asked Phuong to go with her to the bank at 8:00 a.m. on March 17, 2023 to withdraw the money and give it back to her.

At 7:00 a.m. on March 17, 2023, Phuong went to the bank to check and saw that the balance was 1.3 billion VND, so she withdrew 1 billion VND. Knowing that Phuong had withdrawn the money, Ms. T. called many times but Phuong did not answer the phone. At 9:00 a.m. the same day, Phuong went to another bank in Hung Yen to open and deposit 1 billion VND into Phuong's account. After that, Phuong texted Ms. T. on Zalo saying that she had withdrawn 1 billion VND and asked to borrow from Ms. T. but Ms. T. did not agree.

Unable to contact Phuong, Ms. T. filed a complaint with the Investigation Police Agency (Hai Duong Provincial Police). After appropriating 1 billion VND, Phuong fled the area and used the money to pay off debts and personal expenses. Phuong was temporarily detained on April 3, 2024.

The jury sentenced Hoang Thi Mai Phuong to 13 years in prison for abuse of trust to appropriate property under Clause 4, Article 175 of the Penal Code.
