The approval of the vaccine against the XBB.1.5 subtype of the Omicron variant comes as South Korea recommends that people get free vaccinations of updated Covid-19 vaccines.
According to Yonhap news agency, on September 26, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it has granted emergency use authorization for Moderna's updated Covid-19 vaccine to prevent the currently dominant XBB.1.5 sub-variant.
The approval of the vaccine against the XBB.1.5 subtype of the Omicron variant comes as the ministry recommends that people get free vaccinations against Covid-19 from October 19 ahead of the coming winter.
Emergency approval from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety usually comes after the government requests appropriate response measures to an infectious disease or public health crisis.
Earlier this month, the ministry also granted emergency use authorization for Pfizer's vaccine against the XBB.1.5 sub-variant.
Currently, many countries around the world, including the US and Canada, have also approved Moderna's updated vaccine to prevent the spread of the XBB.1.5 sub-variant.
