According to Yonhap news agency, on March 28, the election campaigns for the new National Assembly election in Korea on April 10 officially began.

The election, which takes place every four years, is crucial for the ruling People's Power Party (PPP). If it fails to win a majority in the National Assembly, President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration will have difficulty passing policies in the remaining three years of its five-year term.

The PPP has called on voters to support it in order to win a majority in the National Assembly after this election. Over the past two years, the administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol has failed to push through many of its agendas due to the opposition Democratic Party (DP) holding a majority in the National Assembly.

Leaders of both parties chose Seoul as the first stop to kick off their election campaigns.

Opening the election campaign, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon highlighted the party's efforts to address people's livelihood issues.

Meanwhile, DP Chairman Lee Jae-myung plans to hold a campaign event at Yongsan Station in central Seoul.

Observers say the 48 constituencies in the capital Seoul will be the most competitive and will determine the election outcome. Previous data shows that election results in Seoul often reflect the overall results.

In this election, candidates will compete for 300 seats in the South Korean National Assembly, of which 254 will be directly elected and 46 will be elected through proportional representation.

Polls show the DP could win more than 200 seats in the legislature, reaching the crucial two-thirds majority that would give the party the power to veto presidential decisions and even impeach the president.

A day earlier, South Korean voters in the United States began casting their ballots under the overseas voting program. Voting is expected to last until April 1. About 2,800 South Korean citizens have registered to vote in the US states of Washington, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Polling stations have been set up in Virginia and Maryland.

According to the National Election Commission, a total of 147,989 South Korean citizens are eligible to vote overseas, with 220 polling stations in 115 countries.
