Fire at amusement park in India kills 24 people

A serious fire broke out on May 25 at the “TRP Game Zone” amusement park in Rajkot city, Gujarat state, western India, killing 24 people, including at least 9 children.

A huge fire engulfed an entertainment complex in Rajkot, Gujarat state, western India, on the evening of May 25.

Police officer Raju Bhargava said the fire was under control and rescue operations were underway with 24 bodies recovered.

The amusement park “TRP Game Zone” is owned by businessman Yuvraj Singh Solanki. According to Mr. Bhargava, the police will file a case against the owner for negligence. The investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway.

The scene of the fire is a popular spot for families with young children to enjoy on summer weekends.

Immediately after the incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media X, in which he expressed “deep pain over the damage caused by the fire… in Rajkot” and sent “condolences to all those who lost their loved ones” and “prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Also on X network, Indian President Droupadi Murmu expressed “deep sorrow to learn of the loss of life in the fire at the amusement park in Rajkot, Gujarat. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones... I pray for the speedy recovery of those rescued.”

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced compensation of Rs 400,000 ($4,816) to the families of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 ($600) to each of the injured.

Fires are common in India, where builders and residents often flout building codes and safety rules.
