The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hau (born in 1967, in Mau Cong village, Quang Trung commune, Tu Ky, Hai Duong) is poor and often does not have enough money to pay for her children's school fees.
The makeshift house, which has deteriorated in many places, is the living place of Mrs. Hau, her sister Nguyen Thi Hien (born in 1963) and daughter Nguyen Thi Giang (born in 2010). In the empty house, only the bed, a set of tables and chairs and an old electric fan are valuable.
Telling us about her life, Mrs. Hau said that she was born into poverty, her life revolved around catching crabs and snails, so she was always self-conscious and never dared to think about having a husband and children. At over 40 years old, she decided to become a single mother, just with the hope of having support when she got old.
After giving birth to Giang, Mrs. Hau often suffered from vertigo. Because she had no money, her illness could not be treated promptly. Whenever she felt dizzy or fainted, her family took her to the medical station. Because of her poor health, Mrs. Hau only had to work with more than one acre of rice. During her free time, she caught crabs and snails to earn some extra money.
The child grew up while Mrs. Hau's health declined. The life of Mrs. Hau and her elderly sister became miserable, especially when they had to pay for their child's school fees.
Wiping away her tears, Mrs. Hau confided: "Many times I just have to ask the school to pay the debt because selling snails for a week is not enough to pay for my child's tuition. I feel sorry for my child but I am helpless."
Understanding and sympathizing with her sister and niece, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hien could not help much because Mrs. Hien was also in poor health. Mrs. Hien said: "I can only encourage her, the two of us try to catch more shrimp and snails to earn money for her to study, the house is leaking but the two of us do not have money to fix it."
Despite her difficult family circumstances, Nguyen Thi Giang, a 9th grader at Quang Trung Secondary School, is not self-conscious but always uses that as motivation to overcome her circumstances. From primary school to grade 9, Giang has always been a good and excellent student at school. Giang's academic achievements have always been the pride of her mother and uncle.
When asked, the little girl emotionally said: "My family's economy is difficult, so I once thought about dropping out of school after finishing 9th grade, but if possible, I still wish I could finish high school like my friends to earn money to take care of my mother and aunt so they can have a more spacious house and not have to live in a dilapidated house like this anymore."
Mrs. Hau's family is near-poor. Sharing about the situation of Mrs. Hau and her children, Mr. Truong Van Huong, Chairman of the Quang Trung Commune Red Cross Society, said that Mrs. Hau and her sister are single, sick and have to raise a small child. In the past, the locality and the village have also had many activities to support the family, but to no avail. Through this, the locality also hopes that all levels, sectors and benefactors will pay attention and support to help Giang have the opportunity to continue going to school and Mrs. Hau can repair her dilapidated house.
