Apple Watch encounters "blue screen" error after watchOS 9.5 update

Some Apple Watch users said that they encountered a blue screen after installing the watchOS 9.5 update that was released by Apple last week.

Images on Reddit show the Apple smartwatch's display having a significantly different color than the traditional OLED black before the OS update. The majority of complaints on Reddit and MacRumors relate to the Apple Watch Series 8 and below, while the Watch Ultra has not been reported to have this problem.

Not all Apple Watch owners are experiencing the same issue. Some devices, for example, have a distinct green tint to their display, while others say their device’s display is “lighter than it was before installing watchOS 9.5, but not quite green.”

Netizens also speculate that this was an intentional change by Apple but that the company “overdid it” in some cases. However, this is unlikely based on the number and extent of Apple Watch devices affected by the update.

Users say the new blue color is most noticeable on the control center screen, notification center, or when unlocking the screen with a password.

This "bug" affects each Apple Watch device differently.

Apple equipped the Apple Watch with an OLED display, which means the device can display colors close to pure black, so any changes in display color will be easily noticeable.

The cause of this phenomenon could be bugs affecting the background blur effect on this smartwatch.

Similar “green screen” issues have occurred with iPhone lines over the years, including the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12.
