24 people died due to storm number 3 (Yagi)

Storm No. 3 (Yagi) made landfall in the North, killing 24 people and leaving 3 missing, including 6 in Lao Cai, 5 in Quang Ninh, and 4 in Hanoi and Hoa Binh each.

Statistics as of the evening of September 8 from the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention as well as several localities showed that the strongest storm in decades had killed 24 people, mainly due to landslides and fallen trees.

The eye of the storm in Quang Ninh suffered the most damage with 5 deaths, including an officer of Military Region 3 and a police officer of the provincial prison. Of the 229 injured in the entire region, Quang Ninh had 157. All of them were injured yesterday, when the storm made landfall with winds of level 12-13, with Bai Chay reaching level 14.

Lao Cai and Hoa Binh are in the direct impact area of ​​the storm, with winds of level 8-9 and continuous rain over the past two days, causing waterlogging, poor connectivity and landslides. In addition to the 6 people killed in Sa Pa town, Lao Cai also injured 9 people due to landslides burying a residential area located about 100 meters from the foot of the mountain.

Located in the path of the storm and exposed to force 10 winds, Hanoi recorded 4 deaths and 17 injuries, mainly due to fallen trees. The city recorded 24,800 fallen trees, concentrated in Hoang Mai, Long Bien, Gia Lam, Dong Anh, Nam Tu Liem...

Other localities such as Hai Phong recorded 2 deaths; Hai Duong, Yen Bai, Lang Son each had 1 death. Bac Giang had 1 person, Tuyen Quang had 2 people missing due to floods.

Typhoon Yagi damaged more than 8,010 houses; 25 boats in Quang Ninh sank at their anchorages. Quang Ninh also had more than 1,100 aquaculture cages sunk or swept away.

The power and telecommunications systems were paralyzed on a large scale. Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, and Hanoi lost power due to problems with 5 500kV lines, 31 220kV lines, and 97 110kV lines. By the evening of September 8, many areas in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong still had no electricity.

The agricultural sector reported that nearly 110,000 hectares of rice were flooded, concentrated in Hai Phong (7,000 hectares), Thai Binh (29,000 hectares), Hung Yen (12,110 hectares), and Hai Duong (18,500 hectares). 17,920 hectares of crops and 6,900 hectares of fruit trees were damaged.

Currently, many northern provinces are still raining. The meteorological agency forecasts that in the next 24-48 hours, the Northwest will have 70-140 mm of rain, with some places receiving over 250 mm; from the night of September 9 to the evening of September 10, it will have 50-100 mm of rain, with some places receiving over 200 mm. The Northeast and Thanh Hoa will have lighter rain, ranging from 40-80 mm, with some places receiving over 150 mm from the night of September 8 to the evening of September 9.
