Yamaha has proposed a plan to negotiate to buy back motorbikes with faulty engine numbers from consumers, possibly up to 3,200 units, but there is no commitment if the motorbikes encounter legal problems when customers continue to use them.

A representative of Yamaha Vietnam said that in the recall that the company started to carry out for 159,320 motorbikes, it is estimated that about 1,600 - 3,200 motorbikes have incorrect engine numbering surfaces, equivalent to a rate of 1 - 2%.

In a notice issued by the National Competition Commission on March 4, the Japanese car company proposed a plan to negotiate the purchase of defective motorbikes from consumers.

However, in the latest announcement published on the official website of Yamaha Vietnam, this car company has changed the content of the remedy plan to "there will be an appropriate plan to ensure the rights of consumers and compliance with State regulations".

According to Yamaha Vietnam, the change in content is simply a matter of wording and in fact expands other forms of remedy. In particular, the measure of buying back defective vehicles from customers is still prioritized. Currently, the car company has not yet completed the formula for calculating the buyback price.

Notably, in the event that Yamaha and the customer do not reach an agreement on the buyback price, the car company will not make any commitments if the vehicle encounters legal problems when the customer continues to use the vehicle.

Some opinions say that the issue that consumers are most concerned about today is the repurchase value of manufacturers and distributors. Because if the value is too low, consumers will suffer losses while the fault lies with the manufacturer.

Yamaha's record-breaking recall of vehicles can be considered a rare incident in the Vietnamese automobile and motorbike industry.

Previously, Yamaha Vietnam received feedback about the situation where some customers could not register their vehicles because the authorities discovered that the engine code had been erased or closed.

After verification, Yamaha Vietnam said that during the engine numbering process, some workers at the factory took spontaneous actions, specifically skipping the step of destroying the defective engine cover and arbitrarily repairing the defective engine cover.

This is the reason for Yamaha's record recall since its official presence in Vietnam. The models subject to recall include: Jupiter, Latte, LEXi, Grande Nozza, Exciter, Freego, Janus, NVX, PG-1 and Sirus.
