Mexican authorities have just said that at least 5 people were killed and 7 others were injured after a shooting occurred at a bar in Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco state, in the southeast of the country.
The incident occurred on the night of January 4 (local time) when an armed group stormed the “La Casita Azul” bar in the Tamulté neighborhood and opened fire on people inside, according to a statement from the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
The SSPC is working with relevant agencies to extract surveillance cameras to investigate the incident and track down the perpetrators. Tabasco is an oil-producing state, but has seen high poverty rates and increased violence this year.
According to the National Security Commission, in just the first three days of 2025, the state of Tabasco reported 10 intentional homicides. On November 24, 2024, an armed attack at a local bar also occurred, killing 6 people and injuring 10 others. Statistics show that in the first 11 months of 2024, Mexico recorded nearly 27,800 homicides, an increase of 1.47% compared to the same period last year.
In a related development, on the same day, Mexican authorities announced the theft of a chlorine gas cylinder in the central state of Querétaro, warning people in six states to stay away or contact authorities if they see the device, as it contains a highly toxic substance that can be fatal if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. The silver-colored cylinder has a capacity of 68 kg and was only at 20% capacity at the time of the theft.
