Hong Phong commune changes crops, increases income

September 6, 2022 13:30

Restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development, Hong Phong commune (Ninh Giang) has actively converted ineffective rice fields into high-value crops.

After 7 years, Hong Phong commune has converted 34 hectares of fruit trees to bring high economic value.

From here, Hong Phong became a typical locality of the district in exploiting the potential and advantages of land, increasing income for people.

Hong Phong has more than 330 hectares of agricultural land, of which nearly 1/3 is low-lying, often flooded during the rainy season, and the rice cultivation efficiency is not high. To overcome the situation of "chiem khe - muoi rot", since 1993, some households in the commune have switched to growing fruit trees, but only spontaneously with small areas and low economic efficiency.

In 2015, after land consolidation, the Party Committee of Hong Phong commune issued and started implementing the Project "Developing cultivation, aquaculture associated with product production and consumption, increasing added value, and sustainable development of Hong Phong commune in the period 2016-2020".

During this period, Mr. Nguyen Anh Toi in Dong Hoi village boldly invested over 2.5 billion VND to convert more than 9 hectares of rice fields to grow oranges, grapefruits, raise fish and cows. Since 2017, oranges and grapefruits have begun to bear fruit, with quite good quality. In 2021, Mr. Toi harvested more than 30 tons of sugar oranges, which were bought by traders from the South at 40,000-50,000 VND/kg, earning hundreds of millions of VND in profit.

After 7 years of implementing the project, the whole commune has now converted 34 hectares, concentrated in Dong Hoi and Quang Ruc villages. This area mainly grows Canh oranges and Vinh oranges, while the rest is used to grow green-skinned grapefruit, guava, jackfruit, etc. In recent years, oranges and grapefruits have been priced well, so the value of 1 hectare of agricultural land in the commune has reached more than 160 million VND/year.

According to Mr. Dang Huy Hien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Phong Commune, after the conversion, the economic models have shown clear results. Revenue per unit area has increased, gradually solving the problem of abandoned agricultural land, taking advantage of idle and over-age labor in the locality.

“However, the process of converting the crop structure on rice land of some households has not been highly effective due to poor product quality and unstable agricultural product prices. Traffic roads in some conversion areas are degraded and there is no funding source for repair and upgrading. To overcome this, the Commune People's Committee continues to orient the conversion area to add about 2 hectares each year, focusing on specialized cultivation to improve the quality of agricultural products, and introducing new models with high economic efficiency into production…”, Mr. Hien added.

The conversion of crop structure is the right direction, bringing high economic efficiency to the people of Hong Phong commune. This is the premise for the locality to continue to effectively develop production towards commodities, forming a value chain for production and consumption of agricultural products, helping farmers improve their income...
