The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has issued a project to develop a number of night tourism product models at 12 famous destinations, aiming to attract tourists and increase spending.
According to the project issued on July 14, by 2025, the provinces and cities including Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Da Lat (Lam Dong), Can Tho, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Ho Chi Minh City, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau will strive to have at least one model for developing night tourism products.
In addition to the goal of increasing the number of tourists and increasing spending, the project also aims to extend the length of stay (at least one more night) of domestic and international tourists, contributing to making night tourism a key product to develop the night-time economy in Vietnam. By 2030, expand and form separate night entertainment complexes in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thua Thien Hue, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Da Lat (Lam Dong), Can Tho, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang) and Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
According to the project, there are 5 models for developing night tourism products, including cultural and artistic performances; sports, health care and beauty activities; night shopping and entertainment; night tourism and a model for introducing culinary culture and night food services.
The 12 localities named in the project have the responsibility to proactively select night tourism models that are suitable for their actual conditions, promote existing advantages, meet the national night tourism product development orientation and the needs of tourists. From there, pedestrian streets, food streets, night markets or shopping, sports and entertainment centers will be formed.
The project offers many solutions, including a proposal to increase the opening hours of night service activities, consider adjusting and allowing night service activities to be held until 6am, instead of 2am as at present.
There is also a solution to encourage tourist attractions, historical and cultural relics, and museums to cooperate with travel agencies to organize experience programs to serve tourists at night. Public transport, road and waterway tourism transport businesses are proposed to upgrade equipment to meet the requirements of extending service hours at night.
In addition, there are solutions to develop applications, technology utilities to support tourists, and smart travel cards. Promoting technology in online payments and automation in service provision in models of developing night tourism products are also proposed.
Building standard toilets, setting up a hotline to support tourists, publicly posting prices, and strengthening quality and origin checks of goods are also solutions to develop the night tourism model.
Night tourism products in tourist centers with high tourist numbers are required to develop synchronously, to form a brand of Vietnam's night tourism products.
The project was proposed in the context of Vietnam's tourism being assessed as lacking in entertainment, sightseeing and recreational activities for tourists, especially nightlife activities. A survey from the General Department of Tourism showed that international visitors to Vietnam in 2018 mainly spent on room rental and food and beverage (accounting for 56-60%). Buying goods, souvenirs, sightseeing, entertainment and recreation accounted for 20%, the rest was for other expenses. If only sightseeing and entertainment were counted, the cost would only be 7-10% of the total trip. Meanwhile, in Malaysia and Thailand, this figure is 40-50%, even 70%.
